MEMA Opens Disaster Recovery Centers for Storm Survivors in Mississippi
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) will open six Disaster Recovery Centers and seven Disaster Survivor Assistance sites on Monday, April 27, to assist residents impacted by the January winter ice storm, according to a news release from MEMA.
The centers will provide in-person FEMA registration, assistance information, and referrals to recovery resources. Disaster Survivor Assistance sites are expected to operate for about a week at each location, while the recovery centers will remain open longer depending on demand.
Locations for the Disaster Recovery Centers include the Northeast Community Center in Corinth, Ashland Fire Department, Lafayette County Multipurpose Arena, Leflore County EMA Office, Batesville Enterprise Center, and Yazoo County EMA Office. Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Saturday hours from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The centers will be closed on Sundays.
The Disaster Survivor Assistance sites will open at noon on April 27 at sites in Pittsboro, Nesbit, Grenada, Lexington, Belzoni, and Senatobia, with hours varying by location. Tate County will have a site open only on April 27, then reopen April 28 through May 2.
Individuals do not need to visit a recovery or assistance site to apply for FEMA aid. They can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, call 1-800-621-FEMA, or use the FEMA app. Assistance includes grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans for uninsured property losses, according to MEMA.
Federal funding is available for residents in numerous Mississippi counties and for members of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, the release said. Eligible counties include Adams, Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Claiborne, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Jefferson, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Montgomery, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Warren, Washington, Yalobusha, and Yazoo.
