Disaster assistance site opens in DeSoto County after Jan. ice storm

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said Disaster Survivor Assistance sites will open to help residents affected by the Jan. 23-27 winter ice storm, including a site at the DeSoto County Agri-Education Center at 1170 Starlanding Road West in Nesbit. The agency said the DeSoto site will open Monday, April 27, at noon.

MEMA said the site will be open for about one week. Hours will be Monday, noon to 6 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site will be closed Sunday.

MEMA said residents can register with FEMA in person at the site, get information about available assistance and be connected to recovery resources. FEMA said its assistance is designed to help with disaster-related needs not covered by insurance, including temporary housing, home repairs, personal property and medical expenses.

MEMA said people do not have to visit in person to apply. FEMA can be contacted online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by phone at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). For additional information, MEMA’s Public Information Line is 866-920-6362.
