Mayor says McDonald’s to return to Stateline Road

May 22, 2025 – Get ready for Big Macs on Stateline!

Mayor Darren Musselwhite took to social media to announce that the fast-food chain McDonald’s will soon return to its original Southaven location at Stateline and Hamilton Road.

Beyond the Golden Arches, Musselwhite said the restaurant’s return is part of his design to return the original area of Southaven back to redevelopment.  In particular, the land where the new McDonald’s will be located has been vacant since the fast-food franchise left it that way about three decades ago.

“For several years with our efforts to redevelop ‘Original Southaven,’ we’ve worked with commercial real estate brokers trying to bring life back to this location that has been vacant for 30 years,” Musselwhite said. “We’ve faced many challenges, most notably, the MDOT access restrictions on Stateline Rd.  Finally, McDonald’s is comfortable with Hamilton Road access only.”

Mayor Musselwhite noted that Southaven has three McDonald’s already operating, on Church Road West, Getwell Road and on Goodman Road West. The Stateline Road original location closed with city development to Goodman Road.

The first national chain restaurant in Southaven history was the McDonald’s at Stateline and Hamilton in 1975, five years before city incorporation in 1980.

“Throughout the late 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s, this McDonald’s became much more than a fast-food restaurant as it became a center for social interaction for our citizens,” Musselwhite said. “It was a meeting place and a place to see and be seen, especially for our young people on weekend nights.”

McDonald’s is taking advantage of a West End Business District incentive package and will be returning to the original location. No timeline for that happening was announced, but who knows, the new McDonald’s is close enough to City Hall that it could soon be the spot for a city department head meeting sometime!

The vacant site that was Southaven’s first McDonald’s restaurant will soon return to serving Big Macs when the franchise builds another McDonald’s at this location, according to Mayor Darren Musselwhite. (Bob Bakken/desotocountynews.com)
