Wednesday night crash injures one on I-55 near Hernando

A one-vehicle accident on I-55 near Hernando Wednesday night resulted in a serious injury to the driver and backed up southbound traffic on the interstate for at least two hours.  

According to police, the original call came in around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. A general area was given for an accident but it was not immediately located. A family member of the injured party had picked up the driver and transported him to the hospital.  The hospital notified police at approximately 10:22 pm.

The crash was located about 600 feet into a dense foliage area off the interstate.

The driver was first taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven, and from there to Regional One Health in Memphis. Ellis said the extent of injuries was not immediately known.  

While police were investigating the accident, southbound I-55 was closed between Commerce Street and the I-69/I-269 interchange, according to an alert sent by the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department.

The accident remains under investigation.
