Horn Lake fire chief recognizes outstanding personnel

HORN LAKE, Miss. — Horn Lake Fire Chief David Linville honored the department’s top performers Tuesday night, presenting the annual fire and EMS awards during the regular meeting of the Board of Aldermen.

The ceremony highlighted the dedication of four individuals who Linville said represent the department’s commitment to public safety and professional growth.

Award Recipients

  • Lieutenant of the Year: Adam Tutor
  • Driver of the Year: Jeremy Johnson
  • Firefighter of the Year: Dakota Rich
  • EMS of the Year: Neil Gosswiller

In presenting the Driver of the Year award to Jeremy Johnson, Linville praised Johnson’s versatility and willingness to lead. Johnson recently spent several months acting as a lieutenant while his superior was on leave, effectively managing the responsibilities of both ranks simultaneously.

“He steps up when we need him,” Linville said. “He is outstanding, works well, and takes care of business.”

The Firefighter of the Year award was presented to Dakota Rich, whose career was briefly interrupted by military service. After joining the department in 2019, Rich was called to active duty with the Army for nearly two years. Since his return, he has completed his fire certifications and EMT program, and is currently enrolled in the paramedic program at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

“He is probably the most physically fit in the fire department today,” Linville noted, adding that Rich earned the most physically fit honor at the Fire Academy. “He’s working his way, trying to catch up with Mr. Tutor.”

Neil Gosswiller was named EMS of the Year. Though Gosswiller was unable to attend the meeting because he was out on a call, Linville commended his consistent positive attitude despite the rigors of the job.

“He serves with a smile every day,” Linville said. “I don’t know how you can see the stuff they see every day and still have a grin on your face, but he walks in and takes care of patients at their worst needs.”

Linville also recognized Billy Carroll as the runner-up for the EMS award.
