Hernando Water Service Interruption Tonight Near I-55
A Hernando water service interruption is scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 14, as city crews upgrade a fire hydrant on the east side of town near Interstate 55. The City of Hernando Public Works Department says work will start at about 10 p.m. and is expected to last several hours, so homes and businesses in the affected area may lose water or see reduced pressure overnight.
Where the Hernando Water Service Interruption Will Be
The work is in the vicinity of Industrial Drive, Vaiden Drive and McCracken Road, the commercial and light-industrial area just west of I-55. A map released by the city shades the affected zone, which includes:
- Properties along Industrial Drive, including the section near Industrial Drive West
- Properties on both sides of Vaiden Drive between Industrial Drive and McCracken Road
- The strip along McCracken Road that runs beside the interstate
According to the city’s map, water service in the shaded area “will be temporarily interrupted or affected” while crews upgrade the hydrant. Customers outside that zone should not be affected, according to the notice.
When the Work Is Scheduled
Public Works said it scheduled the job overnight on purpose, to keep disruptions to residents and businesses to a minimum. Here’s what the city said to expect:
- Start time: about 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14
- Length: several hours. The city did not give a specific end time.
- Impact: water may be off completely or pressure may be lower while crews work
The city asked people in the affected area to “plan accordingly” and thanked residents for their patience as it continues improving Hernando’s water infrastructure.
How to Prepare for an Overnight Outage
Businesses with night shifts and anyone who lives in the area may want to take a few simple steps before 10 p.m.:
- Fill pitchers or jugs with drinking water and set aside water for washing.
- Run the dishwasher or washing machine earlier in the evening rather than overnight.
- After service comes back, run cold-water taps for a few minutes to clear any air or sediment from the lines.
- Watch the City of Hernando’s official social media pages for updates, including any boil-water notice. The city has not announced one for this work.
Part of Ongoing Water System Work
Hydrant upgrades help firefighters get the water flow they need and keep the system in good repair. Hernando Public Works has been handling a steady list of water system jobs this fall, including recent water main repairs elsewhere in the city. Questions about tonight’s work can go to the City of Hernando Public Works Department.
DeSoto County News will update this story if the city posts changes to the schedule or the affected area.
