Hernando roundabout construction continues

Hernando city officials are reminding drivers that Phase 2 of the roundabout construction at Highway 51 and Oak Grove is about to start.  Starting Monday, May 6, the west intersection of Highway 51 and Oak Grove Road will be closed. While the west intersection will close Oak Grove Road between Highway 51 and Caffey Street, Highway 51 remains open in both directions during construction.

Detour signs will be used to point out the detour starting Monday and those detours will be in effect until Phase 2 is finished.  The city issued the following map to indicate where the detour will take drivers around the road construction.

There is a Phase 3, to the construction, but that will be just the actual construction of the splitter islands and central island, paving, which is probably take up the final week or so ahead of completion.

Work on the roundabout, which will be similar to the reconstructed intersection at state Highway 301 and Starlanding Road, is expected to be completed in time for the start of school in August. The city chose to start the project at this time of the year for that reason, instead of waiting to start until the end of the current school year.

Anyone with questions is asked to call City Hall at 662-429-9092 during office hours.
