Harris: Money-saving moves during National Moving Month

By Charlestien Harris

May is National Moving Month, which kicks off one of the busiest moving seasons of the year. It’s also when home sales begin to rise, and people start making big changes. Moving can be a hassle and a chore, and it often brings more change than expected. Regardless of the size or distance of your move, protecting your possessions and your family is a top priority.

Still, moving can be an exciting adventure – new home, new places to explore! Here are some practical ways to protect yourself and your wallet while making a move you’ll be happy with.

1. Get More Than One Estimate

When selecting a mover, be sure to get multiple estimates and ask for recommendations. Always get estimates in writing. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of moving and forget to do your homework. Comparing several estimates helps you understand the typical cost of a move like yours and whether the price quoted is in line with industry standards. Be sure to review the contract details and understand what services are included.

2. Avoid Large Down Payments, and Get Everything in Writing

While some movers may request a small “good faith” deposit to hold a date – especially during the busy summer season – be cautious of companies asking for large down payments or full payment in advance. Ensure all agreements are in writing, and keep copies of everything you sign, especially the bill of lading, which is the most important document. Never sign blank forms.

3. Save Money by Reducing Your Household Contents

Hold a garage sale to eliminate items you don’t need, and donate the rest. The more you have to move, the more it will cost. Carefully sort through your belongings and decide what’s worth taking. Making these decisions early will save you both money and time as you adjust to your new surroundings.

4. Make a Checklist for Transferring or Canceling Services

This step can save both time and money. I always say, “Write it down, because you will forget!” Some businesses or rental companies may refund your deposits, but only if you remember to ask. Forgetting to cancel services or inquire about refunds can lead to unexpected charges and throw off your moving budget.

5. Be Prepared for Moving Day

Anything can happen on moving day, so it’s smart to be ready. Pack two separate bags: one “moving bag” with essentials like a change of clothes, first aid supplies, emergency contacts, and medications; and one cooler with beverages and snacks to keep everyone hydrated and energized. Having these items on hand can significantly reduce stress and help you stay organized during the move.

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful or financially overwhelming. With the right preparation and a mover that fits your needs, relocating can be a smooth and even exciting experience. By doing your homework and planning ahead, you’re already taking a smart step toward a more efficient and affordable move.
