Eagle Scout candidate to update library area

Aug. 18, 2025 – A community improvement project led by an Eagle Scout candidate is about to take root at the James F. Anderson Public Library.

Rhodes Bell, who is working toward his Eagle Scout rank, presented his renovation plans Tuesday to the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors. His project will transform the northwest corner garden area of the Hernando library into a welcoming outdoor space for residents.

The project includes planting perennial flowers, adding fresh mulch and ground cover, and installing a picnic table. Bell has worked closely with the library to finalize the details.

While First Regional Library operates the branch, the Board of Supervisors owns the library’s building and grounds. Board members expressed support for Bell’s efforts and said they look forward to the project’s completion.

“This is a meaningful community project that will benefit everyone who visits the library,” supervisors said.

Bell’s Eagle Scout project is expected to begin soon, with the goal of creating a gathering spot where library visitors can relax and enjoy the outdoors.
