DeSoto County officials Saturday are urging drivers to steer clear of snow plow operations and avoid unnecessary travel as icy conditions created dangerous roads across the region.
Snow plow and spreader units have been working throughout the county. Officials thanked residents who have stayed off the roads, noting that reduced traffic allows crews to work more efficiently and safely.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation Saturday issued a warning for 26 counties, advising drivers to avoid non‑essential travel due to ice on roads, bridges, and overpasses. MDOT officials said motorists should only travel in emergencies as freezing conditions persist.
Local authorities echoed the message, urging residents to remain home whenever possible to reduce accidents and ensure emergency responders can operate without delays.
Olive Branch, Southaven police activate weather policies for minor crashes
The Olive Branch Police Department has activated its inclement weather policy, offering guidance for drivers involved in minor crashes. If a collision occurs with no injuries, no suspected impairment, and no need for a tow truck, drivers should exchange personal and insurance information and photograph the scene. They must then schedule a meeting at the Olive Branch Police Department within 10 business days to complete a crash report.
Southaven officials have implemented a similar policy for minor, injury‑free crashes. Drivers are instructed to exchange essential information, document vehicle damage, and report the incident to the Southaven Police Department within five days.
Both departments emphasize that crashes involving injuries or vehicles requiring towing should be reported immediately by calling 911 or the appropriate non‑emergency number.
