DeSoto County deploys emergency waste relief as collection delays persist

HERNANDO, MS — In a direct response to mounting household waste and disrupted service schedules, the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors has greenlit an emergency disposal initiative in partnership with Waste Connections. Starting this week, 16 strategic drop-off sites are being established across the county to provide residents with immediate relief from overflowing bins.

The move comes as many households grapple with the dual impact of delayed collection routes and an increase in residential waste volumes—a byproduct of residents spending extended periods at home.

A Strategic Safety Valve

The Board’s decision aims to mitigate the environmental and logistical strain on local neighborhoods. By placing high-capacity dumpsters in key community hubs, officials hope to bridge the gap while Waste Connections works to stabilize its standard operations.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as crews continue working to restore normal service,” county officials noted in a statement, acknowledging the frustration caused by recent service interruptions.

Where to Find Relief

Crews are currently in the process of distributing the containers, with all 16 locations expected to be fully operational by Tuesday morning. Residents can find the nearest disposal site at the following locations:

In addition to the drop-off sites, Waste Connections has announced a temporary adjustment to its curbside policy. For the current week, drivers will collect additional trash bags placed outside of standard rolling carts.

To ensure efficient collection and prevent littering, officials stress that all bags must be securely tied. This concession is expected to handle a significant portion of the backlog, which some estimates suggest has increased the average household output by several percentage points over the seasonal norm.

Normalcy is the ultimate goal, but for the next 48 hours, the county’s focus remains on clearing the clutter and maintaining public sanitation.
