DeSoto County Courthouse undergoes renovations for accessibility, preservation
HERNANDO, Miss. – The DeSoto County Historic Courthouse, a long-standing symbol of heritage on the Hernando Courthouse Square, is undergoing significant renovations to improve accessibility and efficiency while preserving its classic charm.
The project includes major exterior and interior improvements. All interior work is scheduled to take place during nights and weekends to avoid disrupting daily court operations.
Exterior improvements include the replacement of sidewalks, installation of new railings at stairs and ramps, new flower bed edging, and an upgraded irrigation system.
Inside, crews will replace carpet in courtroom areas, install new flooring in corridors, and complete a full renovation of the main restrooms on the first and second floors.
Supervisor Ray Denison, who serves on the renovation committee, said the work balances the building’s dual role as a landmark and a functional government center.
“This building isn’t just a landmark. It’s a working courthouse that serves the people of DeSoto County every day,” Denison said. “These updates will make it more accessible, more efficient, and even more beautiful.”
Board President Mark Gardner, also a committee member, emphasized the project’s importance for maintaining the county’s heritage.
“Our Historic Courthouse is one of the most recognized symbols of DeSoto County,” Gardner said. “These renovations honor its legacy while making sure it continues to serve residents and visitors safely and comfortably. It’s an important investment in preserving our history and preparing for the future.”
Work on the courthouse is expected to continue throughout the coming months. The building will remain open for business during regular hours.
