DeSoto County, cities announce holiday closures and garbage schedule shifts
DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. — DeSoto County government offices and municipal buildings in Southaven, Hernando, Horn Lake, and Olive Branch will close later this month to observe the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. Officials have also announced a “slide” schedule for residential garbage collection to ensure service for all residents.
DeSoto County Government
DeSoto County offices will be closed Thursday, Dec. 25, and Friday, Dec. 26.
- Garbage Collection: There will be no pickup on Christmas Day. Thursday routes will be collected on Friday, and Friday routes will be collected on Saturday.
- Rubbish Pit: Closed Dec. 25–26; will reopen Saturday, Dec. 27, for regular hours.
- Animal Services: The shelter will be closed from Thursday, Dec. 25, through Saturday, Dec. 27, reopening Monday, Dec. 29.
City of Southaven
Southaven city offices will close Dec. 25–26 for Christmas and Jan. 1–2, 2026, for New Year’s.
- Sanitation: For both holiday weeks, Monday through Wednesday routes remain on schedule. Thursday and Friday pickups will run one day behind.
City of Hernando
Hernando offices will be closed Dec. 25–26 and Jan. 1–2.
- Sanitation: Garbage collection normally scheduled for Friday will move to Saturday (Dec. 27 and Jan. 3).
City of Horn Lake
While emergency and essential operations continue, Horn Lake city offices will close Dec. 25–26 and Jan. 1–2.
- Sanitation: Meridian Waste will utilize a slide schedule for both weeks. Monday–Wednesday collections are normal; Thursday routes move to Friday, and Friday routes move to Saturday.
City of Olive Branch
Olive Branch City Hall and municipal buildings will close Dec. 25–26 and Jan. 1–2.
- Sanitation: Waste Connections will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Collection for those Thursdays will move to Friday, and Friday collection will move to Saturday.
Note: Emergency services including Police, Fire, and EMS will remain fully operational across the county and all cities during these holiday closures.
