National Library Week was celebrated at the M.R. Davis Public Library in Southaven during the dates of April 6–12. At this time, the DeSoto Civic Garden Club recognized this special week to emphasize the impact that libraries, librarians, and library workers have in the lives of children and adults. In appreciation for all that the library provides within the community, a split leaf philodendron plant was given to the library by garden club member Emilie Michael as an expression of the club’s gratitude.
A highlight of what the library provided during National Library Week was a presentation of a variety of educational handouts which could help all ages of gardeners. This information was obtained from the DeSoto County Extension Office in Hernando and displayed at the M.R. Davis Public Library.
Some of those include:
- Selecting landscape shrubs
- Insect pests of ornamental plants in the home and landscape.
- Calendar of home gardening tasks (in Mississippi) and the Mississippi Vegetable Gardeners Guide.
The DeSoto Civic Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., and The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc.
