Northpoint Christian School in Southaven was the recipient of a Magnolia grandiflora, commonly referred to as ‘Little Gem.’ The tree was given by the DeSoto Civic Garden Club in recognition of Arbor Day, which is celebrated each year in Mississippi on the second Friday in February.
The school expressed their many thanks to the garden club for donating the tree, which was planted in the playground area for all to enjoy.
The ‘Little Gem’ magnolia is a variety of the Southern Magnolia, which is the state tree of Mississippi. It is suited for zones 7-9 and at full maturity, it ranges in height from 20-25 feet with a width of 10-15 feet.
As it matures, it will develop into a beautiful evergreen tree that boasts cool shade and fragrant flowers all summer long.
The DeSoto Civic Garden Club is a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc., and The Garden Clubs of Mississippi, Inc.
