Business beat: Hernando celebrates Delta Landing ribbon cutting

Another example of the growth in DeSoto County, and Hernando in particular, was seen Thursday morning when Sky Lake Construction held a ribbon cutting event at its Delta Landing development site.

Residential homes, townhomes and flats along with commercial entities are part of the development unveiled off McIngvale Road and across from the new Hernando High School campus. Groundbreaking was held last May as Phase One of the several phase development is being completed.

Being showcased Thursday were four particular areas: Bellewood Grove, residential area for 55-plus active adults; The LeFlore, with residences for traditional/rear load houses; Onward Point, where three-bedroom, 2.5 bath townhomes are found; and The Flats, with one-and-two bedroom lofts for lease.

In The Flats, 11 commercial bays are being included with the flats.  In all, 30 acres of commercial property are available for mixed-use retail, dining, office space, a hotel, and a bank.

Shawn Massey and Sidney Seale of The Shopping Center Group (TSCG) are representing the development regarding commercial property.

Ten acres of the property has also been donated for future construction of a $19 million state-of-the-art YMCA.  Future plans also include parks and lakes and more.

Sky Lake Construction owner Jerry McBride said he was grateful for the cooperation that the city of Hernando gave him.

”They’ve done everything they could to get us here,” McBride said. “They didn’t give us anything. and we had a lot of compromises. The city of Hernando wants development, they want people to be here but it’s got to be quality.”

Hernando Mayor Chip Johnson reminded everyone the plans for what has become Delta Landing had been approved several years ago. Johnson feels this is going to be a quality development and a great addition to the city of Hernando.

“This project was approved back between 2005 and 2010 and it was going to be a big deal back then,” Johnson said. But then, the economic downturn hit and it just sat there for all those years. We almost forgot about it but it was approved.”
