Board of Aldermen highlights
OLIVE BRANCH
March 19, 2025 – During Tuesday night’s Olive Branch Board of Aldermen meeting, Mayor Ken Adams and the Board of Aldermen recognized Homer Skelton and the Homer Skelton Charitable Foundation for their extremely generous contribution to the City of Olive Branch, making it possible to build six pickleball courts and a restroom facility at the City Park.
The grandchildren of Homer Skelton, Brennon Chapman and Chelsie Chapman Gilbert, presented Mayor Adams a check in the amount of $510,000 on behalf of the Homer Skelton family and Homer Skelton Charitable Foundation.
The City of Olive Branch has been designated as an official Welcome Home Mississippi Certified Retirement City.
Board members also accepted the single bid for pavement preservation projects of $1.051 million from Vance Brothers
“I do think we get a lot of mileage for the price that we get,” said City Engineer Andy Swims. “We want to continue that this year.”
SOUTHAVEN
Mayor Darren Musselwhite and the Board of Aldermen acknowledged the retirement of Southaven Police Officer Lance Weems, who has been police officer for 25 years and prior to coming to Southaven in August 2017 he was with the Horn Lake Police Department.
A bid submitted for the Goodman Road Utilities Relocation Project was rejected and the project will be readvertised.
A donation was approved for The DeSoto County Economic Development Council Salute to Industry for the purpose of promoting the City of Southaven to attract new business to Desoto County.
A minor subdivision application for property at Church/Elmore was approved.
An application to rezone property near Freeman/Malone was tabled. The hearing will continue at the Board Meeting on April 15, 2025.
Approval was given to authorize the bidding process for renovation of the old Fred’s building, which will be the future home for the Southaven Municipal Court.
•Memphis in May wants to promote our Springfest barbecue contest and will also give a financial incentive to our grand champion winner. The city will also promote the Memphis in May barbecue contest.
HERNANDO
City officials awarded the Krewe of Hernando a Community Service Award at Tuesday night’s Board meeting.
Board members approved the advertising for the Green T Rd and McIngvale Roundabout. It’s expected construction could begin around June 1. The board also approved a change in the speed limit from 55 mph to 40 mph on McIngvale from Pleasant Hill to Green T Road.
HORN LAKE
A quorum of four aldermen attending approved a repeal of political sign regulations in the city, although state regulations regarding sign placement remain in effect. A presentation on the Citizens Police Academy and another presentation from the Horn Lake Chamber of Commerce regarding this fall’s Bullfrog Festival was also made. This year’s festival is scheduled for Latimer Lakes Park on Oct. 4 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
