BEYOND THE UNIFORM: Deputy Max Howard
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office is proud to spotlight Deputy Max Howard, who brings an incredible 26 years of law enforcement experience to our team.
A Career of Service
Howard’s journey began in February 1999 when he joined the Memphis Police Department (MPD). After graduating from the MPD Academy that July, he started in the Uniform Patrol Division at the West Precinct. By 2005, he had transferred to the Appling Farms Station, where his dedication and professionalism continued to stand out.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 2010, Howard earned a promotion to Sergeant and began serving in investigative roles in the General Assignment and Domestic Violence Units. His career took flight—literally—in 2014, when he joined the MPD Aviation Unit. There, he earned his FAA Commercial Rotorcraft License and logged more than 700 flight hours, supporting both patrol and special operations.
By 2018, he had been promoted to Lieutenant, overseeing both the Canine and Aviation Units. His upward path continued in 2021 with a promotion to Major, where he served as Shift Commander for the Special Traffic Investigation Squad (STS) before stepping into the role of Executive Officer of Special Operations.
Continuing His Legacy
After retiring from MPD in March 2024, Howard wasn’t ready to leave the profession he loved. Just two months later, he joined the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Transport Team, continuing his service with the same passion and dedication that has defined his career.
Beyond the Badge
Outside of his professional life, Deputy Howard is a devoted husband and father. His wife is a registered nurse at Baptist Memorial Hospital, and together they are raising two children. The Howard family is also deeply rooted in their community through their involvement at St. Patrick Presbyterian Church in Collierville.
Honoring His Dedication
Deputy Max Howard’s experience, leadership, and unwavering commitment make him an invaluable member of the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office. His career reflects not only professional excellence but also a heart for service.
“The strength of a community is built on the dedication of those who protect it.”
Deputy Howard, we thank you for your decades of service and for continuing to inspire us all.
