Among the items addressed at Tuesday night’s Southaven Board of Aldermen meeting was approval of an application by Northwest Mississippi Community College’s DeSoto Center for a new health science building and campus entrance.
According to Whitney Choat-Cook, city planning director, the addition includes a new two-story building of 41,562 square feet in size. The building will house the new workforce and health sciences area of the college.
As part of the application, Northwest also wants to build a new entry point to the site via Church Road, between the retail shopping area and the Mapco station at the corner of Highway 51 and Church Road.
“The college wanted to take that lot and build a new grand entrance into the college,” Choat-Cook said. “It gives them more visibility from Church Road. They have plans for a new video board there to only advertise for the school. It is just for school notices. It is a big entrance for them and gives them more visibility from Church Road.”
The new building would replace portions of the existing parking area on the school’s west side. New medians and drive isles would be part of the new area.
The application was approved without opposition.
