A Night of Hope Sells Out in Nesbit; Raffle Still Open

DeSoto Hope’s sixth annual A Night of Hope fundraiser, themed “Giving Cancer the Boot,” is set for Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the DeSoto County Agri-Education Center in Nesbit. Individual tickets and tables are sold out. A diamond-pendant raffle is still open to anyone who wants to support local cancer patients.

Money raised at the event pays for the nonprofit’s programs for DeSoto County residents facing cancer, from care baskets for new patients to travel help and college scholarships.

How DeSoto Hope Helps Local Cancer Patients

DeSoto Hope is a DeSoto County nonprofit run by cancer survivors and patients. Its stated mission is to make sure no one feels forgotten during their cancer journey. Proceeds from A Night of Hope fund three main programs:

  • Hope Baskets: Care packages for county residents who are starting cancer treatment, filled with supplies for treatment along with comfort and encouragement. Patients or loved ones can request one through the group’s website.
  • Travel Grants: Financial help for people seeking a second opinion.
  • Scholarships: Awards for students whose families have been affected by cancer.

The group’s leadership team is made up of women from Southaven, Olive Branch and Hernando who have faced breast, colorectal, ovarian and other cancers. Several of them are still in treatment.

DeSoto Hope also organizes other community events during the year, including Light Up the Lake and a DeSoto County cancer survivor day. Its website accepts direct donations and memorial gifts.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Support

The fundraiser comes near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when several DeSoto County businesses have been raising money for the group. Earlier this week, a Hernando Main Street Chamber promotion gave $1 from each “Pink Skies” drink sold to DeSoto Hope.
