Schools update COVID-19 case, quarantine numbers

DeSoto County Schools on Monday morning reported 59 new cases of coronavirus among its student population, according to its weekly report. The reports cover the previous week ending Friday, Feb. 5.  

Olive Branch Elementary School reported the most new cases at six. Schools that had five new cases included Southaven Middle, Hernando Middle, and DeSoto Central Middle.

The district reported a total of 528 new quarantines last week among students. The most number of new quarantines were at Southaven Middle with 125. DeSoto Central Middle and Hernando Middle each reported 54 new quarantines.

Monday, the Mississippi State Department of Health reported DeSoto County with 55 new cases for a total of 18,838, which is the highest county total among the state’s counties. There were no additional deaths in the county through 6 p.m. Sunday for a total of 217. Hinds County remains the location where the most people have died from the virus, now with a total of 362.  

Mississippi, as a state, Monday morning reported 635 new cases of COVID-19 for a total of 282,313 positive cases. There was one additional death report from Carroll County for a total of 6,270.  

The seven-day average number of cases Monday was at 944. At one time, the figure was closer to 2,400 in January.  Meanwhile, the 14-day average number of cases in Mississippi is at 1,226, the lowest figure since late November.  

The number of recoveries from COVID-19, MSDH reports, is at 238,176.  

Statewide hospitalizations continue on the downward trend, from 1,229 with confirmed COVID-19 cases on Jan. 18 to 787 on Feb. 5, the last date reported from MSDH. Patients in an ICU unit with coronavirus have gone from 336 on Jan. 17 to 215 on Feb. 5.  

Ventilator patients were at 120 statewide on Feb. 5. They were at 192 on Jan. 20.

On Sunday, Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven reported to MSDH 41 coronavirus patients and seven ICU patients with COVID-19. Methodist-Olive Branch Hospital Sunday had 12 virus patients and three in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
