JACKSON, Miss. – In a decisive move today, State Auditor Shad White announced the arrest of Lacosta Lee, a contracted probation officer affiliated with Court Programs, Inc (CPI), on charges of embezzlement. Special Agents from the State Auditor’s Office took Lee into custody following allegations that she misappropriated funds intended for court-ordered fines and fees.
Lee stands accused of diverting these funds for personal use, prompting the issuance of a $7,558.50 demand letter at the time of her arrest. State Auditor Shad White underscored the commitment of his office’s investigative team to collaborate closely with prosecutors, emphasizing their pursuit of significant outcomes in every case.
“The dedicated team at the State Auditor’s Office continues to work closely with prosecutors to get record results, one case at a time,” said Auditor Shad White.
Each count of embezzlement carries potential penalties of up to $5,000 in fines and 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction. As per legal protocol, all individuals apprehended by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The public is encouraged to report suspected fraud promptly to the Auditor’s office through their online reporting tool or by phone during business hours.
Shad White assumed office as Mississippi’s 42nd State Auditor in July 2018, subsequently securing re-election. Known for his resolute approach, White has overseen landmark achievements during his tenure, including halting the state’s largest public fraud case and achieving record civil recoveries. His office’s investigations have resulted in extensive prison sentences for offenders. White’s professional credentials include a certificate in forensic accounting and certification as a Fraud Examiner. He also serves as a captain in the Mississippi National Guard.
Raised in Jones County, White pursued his education at Ole Miss, the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, and Harvard Law School. He resides with his family in Rankin County and is an active member of St. Richard Church.
