Clarksdale native returns to Northwest, earns straight A’s while working full time

Mandy Bolen Herring, a Clarksdale native, returned to Northwest this year to finish a general studies degree and has earned all A’s, a college news release said. Herring works full time as an insurance underwriter and lives in Batesville.

Herring first attended Northwest in the mid-1990s and decided to complete her degree to open new career doors, the release said. She described her responsibilities by saying, “I’m 50 years old, employed full time, married, with a sophomore and senior in high school, and… over 70 head of mama cows that are a full time job in themselves.”

She said her advisor helped her choose electives that matched her professional goals and build a manageable schedule. Herring also said she overcame a low grade-point average from her earlier college experience and added, “I have proudly had all A’s both semesters.”

Herring urged new students to balance enjoyment with purpose. “Savor every moment, but don’t forget the real reason you are here… and by all means, GO TO CLASS!” the release quoted her as saying. The college’s announcement encouraged students to meet with an advisor to plan their paths forward.
