Wild Hog Control Program starts Saturday

JACKSON, Miss. — Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson announced that the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce will accept applications for its Wild Hog Control Program (WHCP) from Saturday, Nov. 1, through Saturday, Nov. 15. All Mississippi counties are eligible.

Through the WHCP, MDAC provides “smart” traps to landowners and land managers to reduce wild hog damage on private agricultural and forestry lands. The agency also offers training on trap use and technical guidance for effective control.

Applications must be submitted online at mdac.ms.gov/whcp. Proposals will be evaluated on acreage available for trapping, documented agricultural losses, and current trapping efforts. Small-acreage neighbors are encouraged to apply cooperatively. Traps are loaned in one-month intervals, and MDAC recommends roughly one trap per 500 acres, depending on terrain and land use. Questions can be directed to Harold Leonard at HaroldL@mdac.ms.gov.
