Watson warns residents about third-party voter registration mailers
Aug. 18, 2025 – Mississippi election officials are warning residents about third-party voter registration mailers that are expected to be sent across the state in the coming weeks.
According to the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office, the Voter Participation Center, a private organization, plans to distribute mailers that suggest someone at a given address may not be registered to vote. The forms encourage recipients to complete and return a voter registration application.
State officials stressed that these mailers do not come from the Secretary of State’s Office or county Circuit Clerks, and they do not indicate any change in a voter’s official registration status.
In previous years, Circuit Clerk offices and the Secretary of State’s Office have received numerous calls from confused residents about the mailings.
“Voters should always rely on trusted sources for election information,” the Secretary of State’s Office said in a statement. “Official election guidance is available through local election officials and the Secretary of State’s Office, not from third-party organizations.”
The office noted that organizations like the Voter Participation Center often obtain mailing address data through public records requests filed under the Freedom of Information Act.
Mississippians can verify their voter registration status at YallVote.ms, or by contacting their county Circuit Clerk. A full list of county Circuit Clerk offices is available on the Secretary of State’s website.
