Troopers report three deaths over Memorial Day weekend
The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) reported that three fatalities occurred on state highways during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Friday afternoon about 4:45 p.m., troopers were called to a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 49 at state Highway 16 in Yazoo County. A 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Lacy Bowman, 34, of Yazoo, traveling northbound, collided with a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Angie Crogier, 82, of Vaughan, traveling southbound at the intersection of U.S. 49 and state Highway 16.
Bowman was taken to the Baptist Hospital in Yazoo City with unknown injuries. A passenger in the Dodge Caravan, identified as Elijah Crogier, 61, of Vaughan was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with unknown injuries, and Angie Crogier received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Tuesday, May 30, at about 5 a.m. troopers responded to a fatal crash on Highway 49 in Stone County. A 2019 Ford F-350 driven by 26-year-old Bradley Mathis of Clayton, North Carolina and passenger 26-year-old Lawson Bond of Sumrall were traveling north on Highway 49. The vehicle left the road and overturned. Bond received fatal injuries from the crash.
The third fatal crash took place one hour later, at about 6 a.m., when troopers were called to a fatal crash on Highway 14 in Holmes County.
A 2000 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 44-year-old John Jones of Goodman traveled east on Highway 14 when the vehicle left the road and overturned. Jones received fatal injuries from the crash.
All three crashes remain under investigation with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
During the weekend, the Mississippi Highway Patrol issued a total of 8,945 citations, made 170 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 961 motorists for seat belt violations. MHP also investigated 156 crashes resulting in 48 injuries with three fatal crashes and three deaths.
In addition, the Mississippi Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division conducted 132 inspections on commercial motor vehicles over the holiday period.
In the Troop E Batesville area that includes DeSoto County, there were 53 citations issued for seatbelt violations and four violations for child restraints.
Troopers in Troop E Batesville responded to four collisions with two injuries.
