Suspect charged in arson at historic Jackson synagogue
JACKSON, Miss. — Authorities have arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with an intentional fire that severely damaged the Beth Israel Congregation, Mississippi’s oldest Jewish institution, early Saturday morning.
The suspect, identified as Stephen Spencer Pittman, was taken into custody after self-admitting to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with non-life-threatening burn injuries. Pittman faces arson charges, though officials say additional charges may be pending as the investigation continues.
Details of the Incident
Jackson Fire Department personnel responded to the blaze in the early morning hours of Jan. 10. Investigators determined the fire was set intentionally, tearing through the synagogue’s administrative offices and library.
The damage is extensive, involving:
- Structural Damage: Significant fire and smoke damage to the interior.
- Religious Materials: Irreplaceable documents and library resources were damaged.
- Operational Impact: The building is currently unusable due to fire, smoke, and water damage.
A Multi-Agency Investigation
Because the incident involved a house of worship, the investigation has drawn a massive response from state and federal agencies. The FBI and ATF are leading the probe, supported by the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and local Jackson fire and police units.
“At the appropriate time, state charges will also be pursued in addition to any federal charges,” authorities said in a joint statement.

A Historic Loss
Founded in 1860, Beth Israel Congregation serves as a cornerstone of the Jewish community in Mississippi. This is not the first time the congregation has faced such a crisis; the institution has a long history of resilience in the face of adversity.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Officials are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact local law enforcement immediately.
