Response to “Financial Freedom of Speech”

Note: The following is a response to a Feb.14 article we ran from state Treasurer David McRae titled, “The Financial Freedom of Speech.” The writer is North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan. Opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect that of this publication.

Concerns raised about politically motivated debanking by President Trump and those across the country deserve serious attention. We must ensure Americans have fair access to financial services – access that is not lost due to political pressure or vague regulatory standards. But Mississippi’s HB 1597 is not the right path forward.

This problem starts and ends in Washington. Expansive, vague, and outdated oversight rules paired with aggressive federal enforcement tactics have created an environment where federal regulators can pressure banks to close accounts for certain people and industries. The Obama and Biden administrations took advantage of this, but President Trump is trying to end it.

Creating a new state-level complaint and enforcement system in Mississippi will not solve that, it will only add another layer of regulation and red tape on top of an already complex financial framework.

When regulatory burdens increase and states have varying laws, Mississippi businesses and consumers lose. For instance, banks may need to scale back services or increase costs to comply. Community banks, in particular, do not have the compliance departments to adapt to fragmented rules.

A strong, competitive banking system hinges on clear and consistent national rules. President Trump issued an executive order to fix this and called on Congress to support his efforts.

Reform is certainly needed, and it should happen where the problem began. Mississippi lawmakers should follow President Trump’s lead, rather than adding more harmful government intervention in the Magnolia State.

Ken Strachan serves as the mayor of North Carrollton, is a member of the Mississippi Municipal League Board of Directors and is North Central Mississippi Mayors Association president.
