Mississippi State Fair opens Thursday with security, patriotic theme

JACKSON, Miss. – The 166th Mississippi State Fair opens Thursday, Oct. 2, with new security rules, traffic improvements and patriotic attractions as part of the nationwide Great American State Fair initiative.

Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Andy Gipson said safety remains the top priority. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Capitol Police, Jackson Police and Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, will patrol the grounds. Clear bag policies, metal detectors, and ID checks for minors will also be in place.

Fairgoers will benefit from the reopening of the I-55 Pascagoula Street exit, easing traffic into downtown Jackson.

This year’s fair will feature red, white and blue-themed events and a partnership with veteran nonprofit 5th Squad, allowing visitors to donate to veterans through QR codes posted on the fairgrounds.

The Mississippi State Fair runs Oct. 2–13. Tickets and schedules are available at www.msstatefair.com.

Ag Commissioner Andy Gipson and other officials addressed security measures, preparations and new details ahead of the Great American Mississippi State Fair taking place October 2-13.
