Mississippi Capitol unveils portrait of former House Speaker Philip Gunn

The Mississippi State Capitol on Wednesday unveiled a portrait of former House Speaker Philip Gunn during a ceremony that paused legislative activities. Gunn, a Republican from Clinton, served as speaker from 2012 to 2024 and was the first Republican to hold the position since Reconstruction.

The painting depicts Gunn seated in an armless, olive-green chair with brass rivets. It does not show him with a gavel or inside the House chamber, a departure from traditional portrait styles. Artist Jason Bouldin said he chose a more relaxed portrayal to reflect Gunn’s generosity and calmness.

Gunn is recognized for leading efforts to change Mississippi’s state flag, which features a Confederate battle emblem. He also championed legislation restricting abortion, contributing to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Other policy achievements include infrastructure improvements, increased teacher salaries, and income tax reductions.
