MEMA urges Mississippians to prepare for dangerous winter weather

PEARL, Miss. — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents statewide to prepare for a significant winter storm expected to bring ice, snow, sleet, and dangerously cold temperatures to much of Mississippi.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service warn that the incoming system could produce heavy ice accumulation, making travel hazardous and potentially leaving some roads impassable. Ice‑laden trees and branches may fall, increasing the risk of widespread power outages. Wind chills are expected to drop into the single digits as temperatures fall well below freezing across the state.

MEMA is asking residents in the projected impact zones to use extreme caution and take steps now to stay safe. The agency recommends assembling a fully stocked emergency kit with water, non‑perishable food, medications, flashlights, extra batteries, and blankets. Officials also urge residents to stay off icy roads, avoid downed power lines, and operate generators outdoors only.

Homeowners are encouraged to let faucets drip to help prevent frozen pipes. If a pipe is suspected to have burst, MEMA advises shutting off the main water valve and contacting a licensed plumber.

Mississippians can find additional winter weather safety guidance and real‑time updates by following MEMA on X, Facebook, and Instagram or visiting MSEMA.org.
