McRae returns $3 million in unclaimed money in time for Christmas

Dec 16, 2024- Mississippi Treasurer David McRae is sending more than 6,000 checks worth almost $3 million this week to citizens across Mississippi. The checks are the result of a proactive unclaimed money match the Treasurer conducted earlier this month. This is the second batch of checks that have gone out as a result of his efforts, with the total amount distributed at more than $4 million.

“Mississippians have to do nothing but cash the check when they receive it,” said McRae. “This was their money all along, and now the state is taking a proactive role in finding the rightful owner and returning the funds before Christmas.”

Unclaimed money is financial assets that have been left inactive, abandoned, or lost for a certain period that are then entrusted to the state to return to its rightful owner.

By law, after years of inactivity banks, brokerages, businesses and other financial institutions are required to report abandoned accounts to the State Treasury. Then, Treasurer McRae’s unclaimed money team works to find the rightful owners.

Since 2020, Treasurer McRae has returned nearly $120 million in unclaimed money to Mississippians, about $40 million in 2024 alone.

“Returning money back to Mississippians has been a priority of mine since day one,” said Treasurer McRae. “I’m proud of the new technologies and system we have set at the State Treasury. We won’t stop until every dollar has been returned to its rightful owner.”
