McRae: Filled with Gratitude
By Treasurer David McRae
As 2025 begins to wind down, I’ve taken a moment to look back on all we’ve accomplished together at the Mississippi Treasury this past year. It’s been a busy season, but one filled with real progress for the people of our state.
We crossed a major milestone by returning more than $150 million in unclaimed money to Mississippians. This means that during my time as Treasurer, our team has returned more money than all previous Treasurers – combined. That didn’t happen by accident. It came from a commitment to treat unclaimed money for what it is: your money. The team also launched our proactive Money Match program, where we verify someone’s identity and send them their funds automatically. It’s one of the simplest, most direct ways the Treasury can work for you.
At the same time, our Mississippi College and Career Savings programs helped hundreds of families get a jump-start on planning for their children’s futures. At a time when Mississippi’s education outcomes are climbing (while many other states are slipping), these savings tools help keep that momentum going by giving more students a real shot at the next step.
Finally, Mississippi reached a financial milestone this year unlike anything we’ve seen before. For the first time in state history, we cleared $1 billion in interest income. By being smart with the state’s finances, we’re fighting to do more with every tax dollar in our care, ultimately alleviating the long-term tax burden on you.
When I think about all this work, I’m incredibly grateful for the team at the Treasury who shows up every day ready to serve. But what I’m most thankful for is my wife, Katie, and our three children. My job fills my cup, but I know that being her husband and their father is what truly matters.
From my family to yours, I hope you have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.
