McRae: Attention Nonprofits
By Treasurer David McRae
National Nonprofit Day is quickly approaching on August 17. In anticipation, I’m urging all nonprofit organizations across the state to search for unclaimed money that rightfully belongs to them. There are hundreds of thousands of outstanding funds that have yet to be claimed. Let this day serve as a reminder of how important their missions and services are to our Mississippi communities.
Nonprofits play a crucial role in Mississippi’s social structure. These organizations do incredible work to make the world a better place. Many of these organizations may be unaware that they are entitled to unclaimed money, which includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and much more.
At the State Treasury, we understand how impactful the missions and community service projects of the nonprofits in the state are. My team works tirelessly to locate missing owners; process claims efficiently and prevent fraud.
Last year, the State Treasury’s Unclaimed Money Department returned a record-breaking $40 million back to Mississippians. Since my time as Treasurer, we have returned just shy of $150 million. It’s no secret that one of my top priorities is returning money back to Mississippians, but a lot of that success is credited to my team and their efforts to modernize the department to make it more efficient. In fact, we are always looking for ways to improve. Including this year, when we started proactively returning state issued checks that were going to expire and money to storm impacted areas.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to search for the name of a nonprofit near and dear to your heart. It’s easy to search, just visit treaury.ms.gov/search and follow the steps.
Whether it’s a grassroots community organization or a large-scale charitable foundation, unclaimed money can provide crucial financial support. These unclaimed funds can support programs, boost outreach, and increase the impact on the communities served.
Together, let’s utilize the power of unclaimed money to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. It just takes a few moments to search, but the reclaimed money can go a long way and have a lasting impact.
