Justice department intensifies fight against human trafficking

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Mississippi joined federal leaders this month to reaffirm a nationwide commitment to dismantling human trafficking networks and protecting survivors. Marking National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, officials highlighted the expansive role of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF), a multi-agency initiative established to disrupt transnational criminal organizations and modern-day slavery.

U.S. Attorney Scott F. Leary emphasized that human exploitation remains a top priority for his office, noting that historical success in prosecuting traffickers will continue with a push for the harshest possible punishments. The effort is supported by a surge in federal resources, including the distribution of reporting materials in Amtrak stations and the launch of educational seminars at high schools and colleges.

Recent enforcement actions showcase the scale of this initiative. Following an executive order aimed at protecting the American people, the HSTF conducted a “September Surge” resulting in over 3,200 arrests. These operations targeted high-level members of the Sinaloa and MS-13 cartels, leading to the seizure of 91 metric tons of narcotics and millions of dollars in illicit currency.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Reports involving victims under the age of 18 must be directed to the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services, while general tips can be submitted through the National Human Trafficking Hotline.
