Jackson State dorm reopens after power outage displaces 500 students

Jackson State University students who were displaced from the Alexander Hall dormitory because of a weekend power outage can return, officials announced Monday.

University officials said a severe weekend storm caused what they initially described as a “mechanical failure” tied to a power outage at the women’s dormitory. Officials initially projected it would take a minimum of two days to resolve the issue, and suggested students pack enough clothes and other essentials for at least three days.

Facilities staff have resolved the issue and confirmed that students can safely return to their rooms.

On Sunday, the university relocated Alexander Hall residents to nearby hotels several miles from campus. The disruption occurred hours before the start of finals week.

In a memo obtained by Mississippi Today, university officials said professors and faculty should make accommodations for students who are participating in finals this week. This includes replacing in-person exams with alternative solutions like projects, online exams and take-home exams.

Some students told Mississippi Today they had less than 15 minutes to pack their belongings and request alternate housing. An email the university sent to students about the situation, which some shared with Mississippi Today, said the emergency housing was based on availability.

This is a breaking news story that will be updated.
