JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi Highway Patrol and the Mississippi Department of Transportation announced Friday, Jan. 30, that major stretches of Interstate 22 and Interstate 55 have reopened to traffic following temporary closures due to hazardous winter conditions.

Officials confirmed that all lanes of I-22/U.S. 78, stretching from Red Banks (Exit 21) to the Tennessee state line, are now clear for travel. Additionally, the previously shuttered section of I-55 north of Como (Exit 257) has been reopened to motorists.

While the lanes are open, MDOT officials warn that “safe” does not necessarily mean “normal.” Residual ice and debris remain a threat, and maintenance crews continue to work along the shoulders and roadways.

“Travel is not advised on either route unless absolutely necessary,” MHP stated in a morning update.

Drivers who must take to the roads are urged to reduce speeds significantly and exercise extreme caution. Maintenance vehicles and emergency responders are still active in these areas, and icy patches may persist in shaded spots or on overpasses.
