Herring named First Circuit Court District Attorney

Gov. Tate Reeves today announced the appointment of Jason D. Herring of Saltillo as District Attorney for the First Circuit Court District, which covers Alcorn, Itawamba, Lee, Monroe, Pontotoc, Prentiss and Tishomingo Counties. This appointment fills a vacancy created by the resignation of the Honorable John Weddle.

“Jason will do an exceptional job as District Attorney,” said Reeves. “I’ll continue to appoint District Attorneys who will uphold public safety and be tough on crime. Jason will be one of those District Attorneys. I thank him for stepping up to fill this important role.”

Herring has been a practicing attorney since 1998. He is the founder and president of Herring Chapman, PA. He previously served as the City Attorney for Saltillo from 2005 to 2012 and the City Attorney for Guntown from 2009 to 2012.

Herring’s primary focus is litigation, having tried hundreds of cases in the state trial courts of Mississippi. Additionally, he has also provided appellate representation to clients before the Mississippi Supreme Court and the Mississippi Court of Appeals.

Herring has represented numerous law enforcement officers involved in officer involved shootings through all stages of investigation and litigation. He is an active attorney panel member for Southern States PBA.

Herring has obtained the AV preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, was previously selected as a Super Lawyer by Thompson Reuters, and is a Daily Journal Reader’s Choice Award Winner. He earned a J.D. and a B.A. from the University of Mississippi.

Herring’s term will begin on Oct. 14 and will end when the position is filled by a special election.
