Four arrests, two charged with murder in 2023 Jackson State University homicide

JACKSON, Miss. — Four people have been arrested in connection with the 2023 shooting death of a man at Jackson State University, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation announced Friday.

The victim, Jaylen Burns, was found with an apparent gunshot wound on Oct. 15, 2023, at the University Pointe Apartments. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. MBI was requested to take over the investigation on Nov. 9, 2023.

MBI announced the arrests of Marquis Scales, 24, and Ziqua Amos, 21, on charges of murder.

Two other individuals were charged as accessories. Elisha Brown, 23, was charged with accessory after the fact and hindering prosecution, and Jamison Kelly, Jr., 23, was charged with accessory after the fact.

The U.S. Marshals Service assisted in locating and arresting the individuals. MBI officials stated they are coordinating with the Hinds County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
