Former state Rep. Nick Bain announced in his hometown of Corinth on Monday that he will run for state auditor next year in the Republican primary.
Bain, who is currently a private practice attorney in northeast Mississippi, said in a news release that he will campaign on investigating public officials for fraud and embezzlement, reviewing state programs for efficiency and ensuring taxpayer dollars are not stolen or wasted.
“Mississippi’s auditor serves a critical oversight role in state government,” Bain said. “We need a proven conservative to audit state and local government finances. My legislative record proves my commitment to protecting taxpayer dollars and fighting for our shared conservative values.”
Bain served three terms in the state House representing Alcorn County. For one of those terms, he was chairman of the House Judiciary B Committee, which has jurisdiction over the state’s criminal laws. He ran for a fourth term in 2023 but was defeated.
The role of the state auditor is to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent legally and to investigate waste, fraud and abuse in state and local government.
State Sen. Daniel Sparks, a Republican from Belmont, is expected to announce in the coming months that he will run for state auditor and compete in the GOP primary. Though he has not yet made a formal announcement, current State Auditor Shad White has said he’s considering running for governor in 2027.
