Deadline nears for Mississippi safe room grant program

PEARL, Miss. — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is reminding residents that the deadline to apply for the Statewide Residential Safe Room Grant Lottery Program is Nov. 30.

The program offers reimbursement grants of up to $3,500 to help homeowners install FEMA-compliant safe rooms or storm shelters on their property. MEMA officials said the initiative is designed to improve safety and preparedness during severe weather.

Applications can be submitted online at my.msema.org by clicking “Safe Room Application” at the top of the page.

Funding is limited to 38 grants per county. The program is not first-come, first-served; instead, all eligible applicants will be entered into a statewide lottery once the application period closes. If grants remain unclaimed in a county, they will be added to a second drawing among statewide applicants.

Homeowners in all 82 Mississippi counties are eligible, but the program applies only to primary residences such as single-family homes. Mobile or manufactured homeowners must also own the land where their home is located. Renters, duplexes, apartments, and community safe rooms are not eligible.
