The DeSoto County football coaching carousel has ground to a halt after Friday’s announcement of a new head football coach at DeSoto Central High School.
The school filled its vacant head football coaching position by attracting a former head coach in the county to return back to lead the Jaguars.
Will Wolfe, most recently an assistant coach at Lafayette (Oxford) has taken the job, it was announced by the school on Friday.
Wolfe was the head coach at Hernando from 2014-2021, where he compiled a 41-51 record in eight years with the Tigers and was 1-3 in postseason play. The Tigers’ best season under Wolfe was in 2016 when they were 8-4 overall, 4-3 in district play, and reached the first round of the playoffs, losing to Clinton in the opening round.
With Hernando, Wolfe was named Region 1-6A Coach of the Year in 2020 and defensive coordinator for the 2017 Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game.
He left Hernando after the 2021 season and was replaced by current Hernando coach Steve McCann, one of his assistants. Wolfe moved to Oxford, where he assisted on the Lafayette staff of head coaches Michael Fair for one season and Anthony Hart this past football campaign.
Prior to Hernando, Wolfe was head coach at Brighton, Tenn. High School, where he became the winningest coach in Brighton school history with a 62-27 record. In 2011, the Cardinals were 9-1, undefeated in district play, and made the second round of the TSSAA 3A football playoffs.
He was named Class 3A District 13 Coach of the Year three times and coached in five All-Star Games.
Shelby Ford left the DeSoto Central position at the end of the 2023 season, amassing a 37-56 record in eight years with the Jaguars. His teams made the playoffs his last three seasons but failed to advance past the first round.
