Tuesday sports: Lady Jags claim three-set sweep over Hernando

Aug 20, 2024– DESOTO CENTRAL 3, HERNANDO 0: The Lady Jags took a three-set sweep from Theron Long Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Hernando led the first set by a 12-9 score, when DeSoto Central called for a timeout, followed by a side out to regain the serve at 12-10 for the Lady Tigers.  Hernando continued to hold the lead until DeSoto Central scored off a block attempt to tie the set 20-all. Two more Lady Jags points pushed their lead to 22-20 when Hernando called a timeout. DeSoto Central scored three of the last five points for the set win, which ended when a Hernando volley went into the net.

DeSoto Central opened with a 7-4 lead in the second set, which caused Hernando to take a time out. The Lady Jags extended the margin to 10-5, and at 15-9 the Lady Tigers called for a break to try and stem the tide. However, DeSoto Central continued to dominate the set with Remy McIntosh serving a string of points, on their way to what became a 10-point set win, 25-15.

The sweep ended in the third set, which was closely played early. Hernando forged a 5-5 tie when Kylee Garcia served an ace. The Lady Tigers forged a 10-6 lead in the set, but a lengthy point ended in favor of DeSoto Central to bring the set within 10-9. The Lady Jags took a 15-12 lead but Hernando rallied back to tie the set at 15-15 and again tied at 19-19, before DeSoto Central took over to score five of the last seven points, which ended with this final point:

Statistically for DeSoto Central, Sydney Tague had 24 assists. Reese McIntosh had 12 kills, 10 digs, and 3 aces. Remy McIntosh had 12 digs and 3 aces. Zion Rucker had 5 blocks and 6 kills.

“I think after Tupelo last week, we had a lot of work to do, so we went to the gym, worked hard and refocused on some things we had to do better if we want to get where we want to be at the end of the season,” said DeSoto Central coach Margaret Falatko. “I think they came out and played really hard, we passed well and we executed the offense. We just played with a lot of heart and effort.”

The Tupelo match referred to a four set victory on Aug. 13 over the Lady Wave at Shan Whiteside Memorial Gymnasium.
