Saturday sports: Rangers football tops East Mississippi

Northwest Mississippi Community College’s football Rangers came away with a solid performance in a 33-14 victory over East Mississippi Saturday night at Senatobia. The 

D’mariun Perteet scored a pair of touchdowns and rushed for 122 yards, while Zach Wilcke passed for 92 yards. M.J. Johnson led with three catches for 44 yards. Jerry Wall III had a 68-yard scoop and score and Fredd Adams had four interceptions, including a pick six. Northwest improved to 2-1 for the season and will play at Coahoma on Thursday, Sept. 19. 

Lake Cormorant volleyball team after winning the Tupelo Volleyfest on Saturday.

Lake Cormorant volleyball won the Tupelo Volleyfest, going 5-0 on the day. The Lady Gators defeated Ingomar in the finals, 25-18 and 26-24. Lake Cormorant also defeated Alcorn Central, New Hope and Tupelo during the tournament and did not lose a set during the day.  

Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball won a pair of matches with Spurgeon College and Champion Christian College, both by 3-0 scores. Both matches were contested in Hot Springs, Ark.

Hernando boys were second to team champion Oxford in the Mooreville cross country meet held in Tupelo Saturday and Preston Mundy of Olive Branch finished third individually with a time of 18:06.07.

DeSoto Central was 15th in the boys’ Blue Division at the Southern Showcase cross country meet in Huntsville, Ala. A total of 58 teams were involved.  The Jaguars’ best finish came from Brayden Edwards in a time of 17:37.29.

DeSoto Central’s Layla McGuire finished 15th in the girls’ Blue Division race in a time of 20:44.92 at the same run in Huntsville. As a team, DeSoto Central was 40th out of 46 teams running.
