Saturday sports: Oxford sweeps baseball series from Lewisburg

The Oxford baseball Chargers finished a two-game sweep of the Lewisburg Patriots Saturday night with a 5-4 come from behind victory on the Patriots’ diamond. The Chargers remained unbeaten in Region 1-7A action while pinning the second straight loss on last year’s MHSAA 6A state champions. It sets up a big series with Hernando this week, starting Tuesday at Oxford and at Hernando on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Patriots will hope to rebound against the DeSoto Central Jaguars on Tuesday at The ‘Burg.
Oxford won the game with two runs in the top of the seventh inning after Lewisburg snatched a 4-3 lead after six innings. Brock Siskey scored the winning run for the Chargers in the seventh on a single to center by Reid Kent.
In the back-and-forth battle, Oxford took the early lead with a run in the second inning, when Jack Gaia scored on a James Blackwood single.
Lewisburg rallied for a 2-1 advantage after four innings. Sam Richardson blasted a solo home run, his fourth of the season, to lead off the fourth and Talon Haley followed with a run off a base hit from Easton Fesmire.
The Chargers regained the lead at 3-2 after a pair of runs in the fifth inning, one driven in on a double and another run scored on a passed ball.
The Patriots pegged a pair of runs in the sixth with a ground ball single by Kody Gilmore that plated Andrew Hendrichovsky and Caden Nelson.
Kody Gilmore had two hits to lead the Lewisburg offense and Austin Hannigan doubled. Matthew Osteen took the loss in relief of starter Cayden Baker, who allowed three runs, walked five and struck out six in five innings of work. Osteen allowed two runs and struck out three in two innings on the mound.
“We’ve got to figure out some approaches at the plate a little bit,” said Lewisburg coach Rusty Cagle after the game. “We’ve got to throw more strikes and play defense behind our pitchers. We’ve got to do the little things better and get some timely hits.”

Note: The Jaguars finished the game with a five-run sixth inning to pick up the run-rule victory. Jack Willis doubled and Caidan Bullard tripled for DeSoto Central in the win. Ethan Carter scored three times, Bullard and Aiden Steht had two hits, Ferguson and Noah Smith each drove in a pair of runs. Bulllard struck out 12 and allowed four hits in the complete-game victory.
DeSoto Central 15, Horn Lake 0 (3 innings)
Note: DeSoto Central scored eight runs in the first and seven more in the second inning of the run-rule victory. Caidan Bullard homered, Peyton Davis tripled and Austin Avent doubled and drove in three runs for the Jaguars. Bullard and Tucker Rudd had two hits each and five different Jaguars scored two runs each. Issaac Andrews was the winning pitcher with two innings pitched, one walk and three strikeouts.
Grenada 14, Lake Cormorant 2 (5 innings)
Note: Grenada scored seven runs in the first and six more in the second inning. Ty Agner and Jake Romero earned the Gators’ only RBIs. Romero doubled for Lake Cormorant’s only extra base hit.
Hernando 7, Southaven 6
Note: Hernando held on to win despite a three-run seventh inning by Southaven. The Tigers scored twice in the first, two more in the second, and three in fourth inning for a 7-3 lead. Preston Johnson scored three runs for Hernando, Meyer Maddox had three hits, including a double, and also drove in three runs. Tyler Sullivan pitched five innings for the Tigers, allowed three runs, walked three and struck out six. Three Southaven batters scored two runs each and four different players and two hits apiece. Carson Enlow doubled and drove in five runs. Stephen Tolbert pitched 3.2 innings in relief, allowed three runs, walked three and struck out five.
