JACKSON, Miss. — In a game defined by grit, defensive tenacity, and timely perimeter shooting, Olive Branch roared back from an early deficit to stun Neshoba Central 58-57 on Thursday night, capturing the MHSAA Girls 6A State Championship at the Mississippi Coliseum.

The Lady Quistors trailed by seven points after the first quarter and faced a persistent Neshoba Central squad that relied on full-court pressure and transition scoring. However, Olive Branch refused to fold, chipping away at the lead until a frantic fourth quarter saw the two powerhouses trade blows in a heavyweight finish.

Dorsey Named MVP

Senior Chloe Dorsey was the engine for Olive Branch, earning Most Valuable Player honors for her balanced performance on both ends of the floor. Dorsey, who paced the team early with 13 first-half points, finished the night with 15.

“I’m just proud,” Dorsey said following the trophy presentation. “Everybody was down on us, everybody had their doubts, but we came out with the win. It means so much because we’ve come from losing games we shouldn’t have lost and fighting through it. It’s a sisterhood.”

The Comeback Trail

Neshoba Central held a 26-25 edge at halftime, but the momentum shifted in the third quarter. Caleigh Nix tied the game at 34-34 with a layup, and a late defensive stand left Olive Branch up 37-36 heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter was a whirlwind. Jayde Matthews, who led all Olive Branch scorers with 17 points, drained a massive corner three-pointer to push the lead to 48-43. Neshoba Central later responded with an “and-one” play to reclaim a 49-48 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

With 1:14 left on the clock, the eighth-grade phenom Nix stepped up, burying a three-pointer to give Olive Branch a 54-52 lead. After Neshoba Central tied the game at the free-throw line with 63 seconds left, Olive Branch executed down the stretch to secure the one-point margin. Ahead four, Olive Branch saw the Lady Rockets hit a last second three pointer but three points were not enough as the Lady Quistors came away with the championship.

Coach’s Perspective

For Olive Branch coach Jason Thompson, the victory was a testament to his team’s composure.

“I told them, ‘Look, keep your composure. We’ve been in this moment before,'” Thompson said. “One of the things [Neshoba Central] feasts off of is turning you over and turning that into easy buckets. I just wanted my kids to stay consistent and solid.”

Thompson specifically praised the poise of Nix, his young star.

Caleigh’s just that special,” Thompson said. “I told her, ‘We’re going to count on you, we’re going to put it on your back.’ She’s built for it.”

Box Score Highlights

Jayde Matthews led the Lady Conquistadors with 17 points, followed by Nix with 16 and Dorsey with 15. Vadaija Pimpton added 10 points and provided a massive defensive spark with a highlight-reel block in the second quarter. Neshoba Central was led by Jiar Henry’s 17 points.
