Northwest women’s soccer remains #1, football at #7
Sep 30, 2024 – Following another 2-0 week that included a shutout win against Pearl River and a close call at Mississippi Gulf Coast, the Northwest women’s soccer team remains in the top spot of the latest NJCAA Division II Women’s Soccer rankings, which were released Monday afternoon.
Northwest (9-0, 4-0 MACCC) has remained No. 1 since the release of the preseason polls in mid-August. The Lady Rangers are followed by Johnson County (Kansas) at No. 2, third-ranked Phoenix College, No. 4 Heartland and fifth-ranked Holmes.
Pearl River slid down a spot from No. 11 to No. 12, while Mississippi Gulf Coast remained firm at No. 20 with a 5-1-1 overall record. Jones College also remains in the Top 10, remaining at No. 6 overall.
Northwest was originally scheduled to face National Park College on Tuesday, Oct. 1, but that match has since been canceled and will not be rescheduled. The Lady Rangers’ next opponent will be Hinds, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m.
Following another MACCC North Division victory against Northeast last week, Northwest has moved up three spots from 10th to No. 7 in the latest NJCAA rankings, released Monday afternoon.
This marks the highest ranking of the season for Northwest since being slotted seventh in the NJCAA preseason rankings in mid-August.
Since a close season-opening loss at Pearl River, the Rangers have won four straight games and improved to 4-1 on the season, including a win against former No. 8 team East Mississippi. Northwest will have a bye week before its next contest, a non-division matchup at Southwest Mississippi on Thursday, October 10.
Hutchinson (Kansas) tops the rankings, followed by Iowa Western at No. 2, third-ranked Snow College (Utah), No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast and fifth-ranked Georgia Military.
Other MACCC programs ranked include Holmes at No. 8 and Jones College at No. 12. Itawamba and Copiah-Lincoln are both unranked, but receiving votes.
