Hustle sweep Wolves in Iowa
The Memphis Hustle (2-1) defeated the Iowa Wolves (0-4) 136-132 to sweep the two-game series in Des Moines, Iowa.
Grizzlies two-way transfer Jacob Gilyard recorded 19 points and eight assists to become the Hustle’s all-time recordholder in assists. His 477 assists eclipse the previous mark of 470 set by Marquis Teague in 88 games across the 2017-18 and 2019-20 seasons.
Matthew Hurt led the Hustle with 29 points and nine rebounds. On assignment from the Grizzlies, Jake LaRavia contributed 27 points. Davon Reed added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Jason Preston finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Adonis Arms totaled 12 points and six rebounds. Two-way transfer GG Jackson II registered 10 points and eight rebounds
On assignment from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Leonard Miller led Iowa with 35 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow assignee Wendell Moore Jr. contributed 21 points. D.J. Carton added 19 points. Trevor Keels tallied 17 points off the bench. Tyrese Martin finished with 15 points.
Gilyard scored the first 11 points of the game for the Hustle as they took a double-digit lead early. A 32-16 second quarter run saw the Wolves retake the lead by halftime. With Memphis trailing by four, Hurt connected on a four-point play to tie the game with 29.9 seconds remaining. Hurt converted on a layup with 18.5 seconds to give the Hustle the lead, and LaRavia sank two free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the victory for Memphis.
Memphis connected on 19 3-pointers and scored 23 points off turnovers. The Hustle outscored Iowa 39-32 in bench points and scored 21 second chance points. The Wolves outscored Memphis 50-40 in the paint.
The Hustle road trip continues as they travel to face the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Friday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
