Hustle beat Warriors with strong fourth quarter
The Memphis Hustle defeated the Santa Cruz Warriors, 107-99, concluding the weekend’s back-to-back tilts at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
Memphis Guard Shaq Buchanan led the team with 27 points (10-24 FG), adding six rebounds and four assists. Reggie Hearn tallied 17 points, three rebounds and an assist on 4-for-6 shooting. Ahmad Caver pitched in 15 points, six assists and three rebounds. Damien Jefferson provided a spark off the bench with 16 points and four rebounds.
Jerome Robinson totaled 19 points, four rebounds and four steals to lead the Warriors. The Santa Cruz bench combined for 47 points, anchored by guard Kalob Ledoux (15 points), forward LJ Figueroa (10 points) and guard Kendall Smith (12 points). Selom Mawugbe finished the night with a double-double for the Warriors, posting 11 points and 12 rebounds.
The Hustle led 95-93 with 4:38 to play in the game before Memphis scored 12 of the final 18 points, a stretch that included seven-straight points from Santi Aldama, to put Santa Cruz out of reach. The Hustle shot 52.4 percent from the floor and 50 percent from 3-point range in the final 12 minutes.
Memphis, who ranks third in the NBA G League averaging 12.4 points per game from the charity stripe, outscored Santa Cruz 22-15 from the free throw line. The Hustle outscored the Warriors 25-14 in points off turnovers.
The Hustle went on an 8-0 run to open the first quarter, but the Warriors fought back to take a 10-point lead, 36-26, going into the second quarter. Memphis battled back to tie the game at 55 before halftime, led by 12 points from Buchanan. The contest featured multiple lead changes in the third quarter, but the Hustle regained the lead, 77-72, heading into the final frame.
