Hernando girls win 7A state cross country title, Johnson wins for Olive Branch in 6A girls race

The Hernando girls have claimed the MHSAA 7A state cross country championship, taking the team title Saturday morning at Choctaw Trails in Jackson. The Lady Tigers claimed the state title with 72 points, 10 fewer than second-place Madison Central with 82. Tupelo was third, Ocean Springs finished fourth, and Lewisburg took fifth place with 144 points.  DeSoto Central was 16th in the team standings. 

Natalie Burge of Hernando finished second in the individual race, running the five-kilometer course in 19:10.90, behind state champion Alex Lee, who finished in 18:02.80. Kyleigh Carter was fifth (19:19.90) and teammate Abby White took sixth place (19:22.70). 

Lewisburg’s best finish in the girls’ race came from eighth-grader Jane Foster in 20th place (20:28.60), followed by Rylee Blanchard in 21st (20:29.70). 

DeSoto Central was led by Layla McGuire, 45th in a time of 21:27.90.

MHSAA 7A girls meet results

In the 7A boys’ event, DeSoto Central was second to Tupelo for the team championship 54-77. Hernando took fourth with 143 points and Lewisburg scored 277 points for 10th place.  

Trace Thornhill of Hernando had the best DeSoto County finish, taking fifth place in a time of 16:14.73. Thornhill was followed in sixth place by DeSoto Central’s James West with a 16:19.22 clocking. Eighth grader Warren Gardner of DeSoto Central took eighth place with a time of 16:22.58.

Lewisburg’s top runner at Saturday’s state meet was Autry Foster, who finished 10th in a time of 16:32.87.

Johnson wins 6A state individual title for Olive Branch girls

Olive Branch was fourth and Center Hill took fifth in the boys’ 6A state cross c,ountry meet, also held Saturday at Choctaw Trails in Jackson. Saltillo won the team title with Pascagoula finishing in second place 39-60. Olive Branch scored 84 points and Center Hill scored 185 points.  

Preston Mundy of Olive Branch was state runner up in the individual race in a time of 16:03.17. Christopher Crockett led Center Hill runners in 18th place overall with a time of 18:06.76.

MHSAA 6A boys meet results

Saltillo also took home the girls state championship in 6A ahead of second-place Gautier 32-66. Center Hill was third with 113 points and Olive Branch was 10th (229 points).

Maykyn Johnson of Olive Branch was the individual state champion in a time of 20:20.34. The top runner on the day for Center Hill was Addison Lee in 12th place at 21:53.05.

NOTABLES: Wyatt Edwards header late in the contest gave Hernando the one-goal victory over Germantown (Madison)… Alivia Harris scored Hernando’s goal during regulation time in the win over Germantown (Madison), a match won in penalty kicks 3-0.  

JAMBOREES START HOOPS SEASON: Several DeSoto County basketball teams took the floor for the first time this season Saturday in jamboree. One jamboree took place at Horn Lake High School. Photos from that jamboree here are credit to Mary Scott, Oak River Media.
